Calvin & Community: Calvin Community Symphony

The Calvin Community Symphony presents a free concert this Friday, March 2 at 8 p.m. in the CFAC auditorium. The concert features works by English composers, including Ralph Vaughan Williams's 5th Symphony and the American premiere of Arnold Bax's "Christmas Eve." The Calvin Community Symphony is under the direction of Robert Nordling.
Admission is free; tickets are not required. A free-will offering will be taken.

Ensemble Series: Wind Ensemble & Symphonic Band

Double Trouble! Both bands combine for an enjoyable concert experience featuring pieces, most of which make use of double letters in their titles. (Vincent Persichetti, Pageant; Gustav Holst, Hammersmith; Percy Grainger, Colonial Song; Ferenc Farkas, Bottle Dance just to name a few.) A great variety of music for everyone to enjoy. The concert will conclude with the performance of both bands. The concert will be presented on Saturday, March 3 at 8 p.m. in the Covenant Fine Arts Center Auditorium.

Artist Series: Turtle Island Quartet
A Love Supreme: The Music of John Coltrane

The Turtle Island Quartet has been a singular force in the creation of bold new trends in chamber music for strings. Winner of the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Classical Crossover Album, Turtle Island Quartet fuses the classical quartet esthetic with contemporary American musical styles; and by devising a performance practice that honors both, the state-of-the-art has inevitably been redefined.
Recorded four decades ago, John Coltrane's A Love Supreme struck a chord in the hearts of millions. TIQ will shed new light on the timeless joy contained in the work of an American Jazz Master.

Please join The Asian Studies Program, the Germanic and Asian Languages Department, and the Department of Music in welcoming special guest artist Wei Zheng, soprano. Her performance, Songs of China, presented on March 12 will include a wide varied of works. Banchinda Laothai, piano, will accompany.
Wei Zheng, Soprano, from Harbin, Hei Long Jiang province in China. She won first place in the 2011 Metropolitan Opera District Auditions in Minnesota. Currently a doctoral student at the University of Minnesota studying with Jean del Santo, Ms. Zheng has sung the role of First Lady in Die Zauberflötefor University Opera Theatre and Cinderella (Cendrillon) while attending Boston Conservatory of Music, where she obtained her Master of Music in Vocal Performance.
Wei recently returned from study at the Schubert Institute in Baden bei Wien, Austria. Among many scholarships and awards, Ms. Zheng is the winner of the 2010 Schubert Club Graduate Voice award. Her most recent performances include Russian Season at Park Square Theater on Oct.23, 2011 and a recital of Chinese music toward completion of her Ph.D. in November of 2011.

Faculty & Guest Series: David Reimer, violin

Violinist David Reimer is an Associate Professor of Music at Calvin College, teaching violin, chamber music, string methods, and music appreciation. Dr. Reimer has an extensive performing knowledge of orchestral literature acquired during 18 years of professional orchestra experience. He currently plays with the Grand Rapids Symphony and the West Shore Symphony Orchestra. He has also played with the West Virginia Symphony, the Akron Symphony, the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, and as Concertmaster for the Mansfield (OH) Symphony. Dr. Reimer has been a founding member of I Solisti di Camera (Chicago-based string quartet) and the Olentangy String Quartet (Columbus, OH). He made his professional concerto debut in 1999, playing the Vivaldi “Winter” Concerto with the Mansfield Symphony, and in 2006 soloed in Vaughan Williams' "The Lark Ascending" with the Calvin College Orchestra on its tour of England.
Tickets are required and available at the Calvin College Box Office. Tickets are $10 for adults and free for students and children.
