Chamber Music Series: Lake Effect Saxophone Quartet

The Lake Effect Saxophone Quartet, formed in February 2010, represents an outgrowth of the Lake Effect Saxophone Trio. In July 2007, Bryan Bredwell, Tiffany Engle, and David Jarrell came together to form a group that would be devoted to promoting the saxophone through thoughtful performances of quality literature. Since then, Lake Effect Saxophones have been working to expand their body of literature while offering meaningful performances in the Grand Rapids area.
The concert will be held on Tuesday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Covenant Fine Arts Center Recital Hall. Admission is free; no tickets are required.

Artist Series: Chanticleer

Covenant Fine Arts Center Auditorium
Called “the world's reigning male chorus” by the New Yorker magazine and named 2008 Ensemble of the Year by Musical America, Chanticleer is known around the world as “an orchestra of voices” for the seamless blend of its twelve male voices ranging from countertenor to bass and its original interpretations of vocal literature from Renaissance to jazz, and from gospel to venturesome new music. Chanticleer will be returning to Calvin College’s campus by popular demand in March 2011.
Chanticleer will perform at Calvin College as part of the Artist Series on Thursday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium.

Ensemble Series: Calvin Orchestra Concerto Concert

Covenant Fine Arts Center Auditorium
On Saturday, March 5, the Calvin College Orchestra will present their annual Concerto Concert. The concert, conducted by Robert Nordling, will feature soloists who were selected by audition at the annual Concerto Competition held in November. Admission is free; no tickets are required.

Faculty & Guest Series: John Varineau, clarinet

Covenant Fine Arts Center Recital Hall
John Varineau teaches clarinet and music fundamentals at Calvin College. He is the Associate Music Director of the Grand Rapids Symphony, conducts the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony, and has also served as the Calvin College Orchestra conductor. John holds a BM from the University of Wyoming and MM from Yale University.
John Varineau will perform as part of the Faculty & Guest Series on Tuesday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Tickets are available at the Calvin College Box Office. Tickets are $10 for adults and free for students and children.

Ensemble Series: Calvin College Wind Ensemble & Symphonic Band

The Calvin College Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band, directed by Tiffany Engle, will present a joint concert on Friday, March 11 at 8 p.m. in the Covenant Fine Arts Center Auditorium. Admission is free; no tickets are required.
Sunday, March 13
Bach Festival: Vesper Service - Capella & Calvin Orchestra
7:30 p.m. -
Covenant Fine Arts Center Auditorium
This worship service is modeled after the Vespers liturgy used in Leipzig during Bach’s time. The music will include chorales, chorale preludes, a prelude and fugue, and Cantata 127, “Herr Jesu Christ, wahr’ Mensch und Gott.” Randall Burghart will conduct the Calvin Capella and members of the Calvin Orchestra, Gregory Crowell will be the organist, and Laura Smit will be the liturgist and preacher.

Faculty & Guest Series: David Reimer, violin

Covenant Fine Arts Center Recital Hall
Violinist David Reimer is an Associate Professor of Music at Calvin College, teaching violin, chamber music, string methods, and music appreciation. Dr. Reimer has an extensive performing knowledge of orchestral literature acquired during 18 years of professional orchestra experience. He currently plays with the Grand Rapids Symphony and the West Shore Symphony Orchestra. He has also played with the West Virginia Symphony, the Akron Symphony, the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, and as Concertmaster for the Mansfield (OH) Symphony. Dr. Reimer has been a founding member of I Solisti di Camera (Chicago-based string quartet) and the Olentangy String Quartet (Columbus, OH). He made his professional concerto debut in 1999, playing the Vivaldi “Winter” Concerto with the Mansfield Symphony, and in 2006 soloed in Vaughan Williams' "The Lark Ascending" with the Calvin College Orchestra on its tour of England.
David Reimer will perform as part of the Faculty & Guest Series on Tuesday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Tickets are available at the Calvin College Box Office. Tickets are $10 for adults and free for students and children.

Bach Collegium Japan, hailed in BBC Music Magazine as “Kings from the East,” comprises a baroque orchestra and choir that has been widely recognized among the world’s leading interpreters of J.S. Bach and his contemporaries. In April 2003, the BCJ performed to over 800 patrons at Calvin College – one of the largest audiences to ever gather for an Artist Series performance.
Bach Collegium Japan will perform at Calvin College as part of the Artist Series on Thursday, March 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium.
