Sietze de Vries studied organ with Jaap Niewenhuijse at the Gouda music school and then furthered his education in Groningen with Johan Beeftink, Jan Jongepier and Wim van Beek. In 1994 he was awarded the pedagogy diploma (Docerend Musicus) summa cum laude as the last pupil of Wim van Beek and in 1996 received his performance diploma (Uitvoerend Musicus) from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where Jos van der Kooy was his teacher. Sietze de Vries concertizes in the Netherlands and abroad, touring and teaching master classes in Europe and the United States. The recipient of many prizes in organ competitions, he has recorded numerous CDs of various periods and styles. He is increasingly sought after as a teacher and composer. This concert of organ improvisations will be performed with the Calvin Alumni Choir and with some audience participation.

Sietze de Vries will perform at Calvin College as part of The Artist Series on Friday, October 2 at 8:00 pm in the Calvin Chapel. Tickets are available at the Calvin College Box Office.

Alumni Choir Choral Retreat
9:30am - 12:00 pm - Calvin Chapel

Renew your voice and your spirit in a choral retreat with Dr. Pearl Shangkuan and the Calvin Alumni Choir on Saturday, October 10, 2009 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Calvin College Chapel.  For choir directors and vocalists, you'll spend the morning in a rehearsal setting filled with vocal and rehearsal techniques, and sprinkled with food for the spirit. The retreat ends with a short midday worship service using the music learned in the morning. This performance is open to the public.

Register for the workshop by contacting Vicki Van Wingerden or register using the on-line registration form. A $10 registration fee is required.

Workshop: Might You Be a Composer?

On Saturday, October 17, music professor Dr. David Fuentes will host a workshop for high school students curious about pursuing composition as a serious hobby or vocation - "Might You be a Composer?" The workshop will cover a variety of topics about composition such as what composers need to possess, what composers need to learn, what composers might expect at college, and what young composers can do now. Participants will also have an opportunity to share their compositions with others. The workshop will be held from 10:00 am-12:30 pm. The workshop is free, but registration is required. ProgramSince 1946 Calvin College has celebrated the gift of music at the annual Fall Music Festival. On Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24, join us for a festive evening of music featuring performances by all of Calvin’s vocal and instrumental ensembles and selected student soloists. The 64th annual Fall Music Festival will be held at 7:30 pm at Grand Rapids Christian High School, DeVos Center for Arts and Worship.

Tickets are required. Proceeds benefit Calvin College's music scholarship program. Tickets are available at the Calvin College Box Office - $12 for adults and $5 for students.

High School Honor Band Festival

honor band programThe High School Honor Band Festival is a day long event for area instrumentalists. The festival is an opportunity for students to interact, learn from and perform with members of the Calvin College Wind Ensemble under the direction of conductor guest conductor Donald DeRoche and Dr. Tiffany Engle. Due to the renovation of the FAC, the 2009 High School Honor Band Festival will take place in two locations. Students and instructors will rehearse throughout the day in the Gezon Auditorium. At 7:00pm, the combined ensemble will give a performance in the Calvin Chapel. This performance is open to the public. Admission is free; no tickets are required.

High School Honor Orchestra Festival

string festival programThe High School Honor Orchestra Festival is a day-long String Orchestra Festival where students from three area schools come together to learn, grow and strengthen their skills as musicians.  Forest Hills Northern High School (Mark Kotchenruther, director), Unity Christian High School (Sarah Jager, director) and Walled Lake Western High School (Valerie Palmieri, director) under the baton of guest conductor Dr. David Bowden will perform on Wednesday, October 28 at 7:00pm in the Forest Hills Northern Auditorium. Admission is free; no tickets are required.

The Artist Series: Boston Camerata with Capella

Founded in 1954, the Boston Camerata preserves and reawakens human memory as expressed through the art of music. It accomplishes this mission through live, historically informed, professional performances of European and American music of the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque eras. Camerata has toured since the mid-70s and has maintained an international presence ever since. The Camerata last appeared at Calvin in 2005 to high acclaim. This concert is presented as part of the celebration of the 500th anniversary year of John Calvin, featuring post-Reformation Psalm settings. The seventeen musicians of the Camerata will be joined by the Calvin Capella.

The Boston Camerata will perform as part of The Artist Series on Friday, October 30 at 8:00pm in the Calvin Chapel.

Tickets are required. Tickets are available at the Calvin College Box Office - $20 for adults and $10 for students.
