| Inner Manor Gate Outer Manor Gate Size of a Manor Manorial Court |
| The manor, strictly speaking, was the mansion of the lord. This mansion often would be fortified, either a wooden castle, or a stone "keep". In addition to providing protection in times of war, the manor was also the site where the lord would hold court; his bannum would entitle him to settle minor juridical affairs among his subjects. |
