Group minor requirements

This minor requires a minimum of 18 regular semester hours (including a three-hour interim course). The remaining regular course requirements will be met by courses from the list below that fit your interests and needs.

Required courses: 6-7 hours

You will take at least one course in History, HIST 263 Europe: High and Late Middle Ages (3 hrs), and one language course of your choice (3-4hrs): Latin, a vernacular European language, Greek, or Arabic at the intermediate level. Ordinarily the language requirement is met with a course in literature, rather than a conversational language course.

Required interim: 3 hours

The medieval studies interim course, IDIS 306, aims to teach skills that are specific to our interdisciplinary method of studying the Middle Ages. This course is offered once every two years. In 2009, the course was on paper making. In Interim 2010, the theme will be "Music, Liturgy and Ceremony in the Gothic Era."

Electives: 9 or more hours

You will choose elective courses out of one of two fields of interest that fit your current major: history and ideas or literature and language. For example, a history or philosophy major will choose elective courses from the “literature and language” field; a classics major would choose elective courses from the “history and ideas” field.
