One of the most exciting or satisfying experiences of your life: I went to Port Gibson, Mississippi last year with the Service Learning Center for spring break. This was very satisfying for me because I was able to help less fortunate people in one of the poorest areas of the United States. I was making a difference and I also grew personally being able to spend a week in fellowship with other Christians. One very exciting experience for me has been choreographing a dance for Dance Guild. It has been wonderful, and God has worked in amazing ways to allow this dance to come together!

FACULTY MENTORS for 2002-2003:
Ken Bratt is a professor of Classics and Director of the Honors Program. He grew up in Grand Rapids, graduated from Calvin and earned his PhD at Princeton University. Currently Ken is teaching Plato's Apology (in Greek) and intermediate Latin while preparing for his ninth Interim in Greece (with Mark Williams). His research interests lie mainly in paleo-Christian archaeology, particularly in Thessaloniki. Outside of class, Ken enjoys racquetball, photography, and hiking, and is heavily involved in church work at Fuller Ave. CRC. He and his wife Laurel have three children: Justin (a Calvin junior), Jessica (a Calvin grad now at Princeton Theological Seminary), and Christina (a Calvin grad currently working for the Van Andel Museum).
Marjorie Gunnoe is a professor of Psychology who spent most of her childhood in the Grand Haven area, graduated from Hope College and earned her PhD at the University of Virginia. She is currently teaching introductory psychology, child psychology, and adolescent psychology. Her current research interests focus on the effects of religious belief on families, but if she ever has a mid-life crisis, she may pursue something related to mapping genes. She finds the concept of extracurricular activites a good joke! She and her husband Charles belong to Boston Square CRC with their two children, Jake (age 6) and Erik (3). Her most exciting moments in life include the birth of her children and teaching her first class.
David Koetje is a professor of Biology who grew up in Wyoming, MI, graduated from Calvin College, and earned his PhD at Purdue University. He is presently teaching courses in biotechnology, cell & tissue culture, and DNA technology investigations. His research focuses on soybean responses to environmental stress, DNA fingerprinting of plant populations, and Christian perspectives in agricultural biotechnology. He has directed several student research assistants on his projects. Outside of class he does a lot of home improvements. He and his wife Karen belong to Beckwith Hills church with their two children Seth (9 years old and born in Moscow, ID) and Michelle (4, born in Westfield NY).
Debra Rienstra is a professor of English and native of Grand Rapids who did her undergraduate work at Calvin and the University of Michigan and earned her PhD at Rutgers University. She is currently teaching written rhetoric and Shakespeare, and also teaches early world lit., early British lit., and the poetry course. Her scholarly interests lie mainly in English religious poetry of the 16th and 17th centuries, and she has also published her own poetry as well as a book on the spiritual dimensions of pregnancy and motherhood (Great with Child). She and her husband Ron are members of Church of the Servant CRC (though he also coordinates LOFT and jazz vespers); they have three children: Miriam(age 9), Jacob(7), and Philip(3).
Christina Van Dyke is a professor of Philosophy who grew up in Grand Rapids, graduated from Calvin as one of our first honors graduates, and earned her PhD degree at Cornell University. Her teaching load presently consists of an introduction to philosophy and the early history of philosophy. In her scholarly work Christina specializes in ancient and medieval philosophy, particularly in the metaphysics of Aquinas. With her son David (age 5) she is a member of Church of the Servant. Their special hobbies are biking and rock climbing together.
