Scholarship Applications

If you are applying for scholarships for the coming year and have not yet formally applied to the program, please complete the application form. Only those accepted into a graduate program or endorsement program can be considered for scholarships.

2008 Scholarships and Requirements for Graduate Students

The Corrine E. Kass Graduate Studies Scholarship

This scholarship is established for the purpose of assisting experienced teachers to return to full- or part-time education in one of the Master of Education programs at Calvin College. To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must, in addition to fulfilling requirements for admission to the graduate programs, have an Undergraduate Grade Point Average of 3.3, must be committed to leadership responsibilities in the education profession, must demonstrate financial need based on criteria for financial aid, and must be enrolled for graduate credit in a minimum of one to two courses per semester.

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:
1. Be entering or enrolled in a Master of Education program.
2. Meet the requirements for admission to the Master of Education program and have an undergraduate grade point average of 3.3 or higher.
3. Financial need as defined by government programs is not required, but there should be some evidence that the scholarship is needed to help meet educational expenses.

If the above criteria are met, leadership potential may also be considered. Preference will be given to those who plan to pursue their educational experience beyond the master's degree level.


The Mary Louise Huizenga Scholarship

The Huizenga Scholarship is awarded to students who have chosen to pursue a Master’s Degree in Special Education at Calvin College. Candidates for this scholarship must be a professing Christian teacher who is committed to furthering his or her education in the field of Special Education for graduate credit.

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  1. Planning to enroll at Calvin College the following year.
  2. Be pursuing a Master’s Degree in Special Education.
  3. Be a full- or part-time student.
  4. Financial need as defined by government programs is not required, but there should be some evidence that the scholarship is needed to help meet educational expenses.

The Fred and Carol J. Van Den Bosch Scholarship

The Van Den Bosch Scholarship is awarded to a graduate student in the M.Ed.-LD program.

Candidates for this scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  1. They must be professing Christian teachers.
  2. They must have had previous teaching experience and be committed to continuing in their profession.
  3. Preference will be given to students taking at least two courses per semester in the M.Ed.-LD program at Calvin College.
  4. Candidates must demonstrate potential for advanced academic scholarship and demonstrate financial need based on criteria for financial aid in effect at Calvin from time to time.
  5. Recipients of this scholarship are requested by the donor to pledge to make future contributions to this scholarship fund in the amount of their scholarship awards if they feel the Lord has blessed them to the degree that they are able to make such contributions.

GENERAL SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

  1. Only students pursuing the M.Ed. Degree or in the case of some scholarships, an endorsement, are eligible for graduate scholarship awards.
  2. Scholarships and other awards will not exceed the cost of tuition paid by the graduate student. Scholarships cannot be used for related costs such as books, etc.
  3. Students must take at least two courses in a calendar year (defined as the summer prior to the academic year and the two terms of the academic year.) Normally, the scholarship will be divided equally among the first two terms in which the student takes a course. This could include two sessions in the summer prior to the designated academic year as well as the fall and spring of that year.
  4. Normally, scholarship awards and tuition reduction certificates received for supervising a Calvin student teacher should not be used during the same term.
  5. The Graduate Office will monitor the enrollment of scholarship recipients and communicate enrollment information to the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid at the beginning of each term.
  6. While it is not required to complete the FAFSA, it does function as one possible way of demonstrating financial need.
