Opportunities - German Interim Abroad
CastleOne of the Highlights of Studying German at Calvin
During the past thirty years, hundreds of Calvin students have enthusiastically participated in the German Interim Abroad conducted each January. This affordable 30-day program provides an in-depth experience of many facets of contemporary German life and culture. In addition, the German Interim Abroad is conducted almost exclusively in German and thus offers you a unique opportunity to practice and improve listening and speaking skills in the language.

The course German 215 prepares you linguistically for the German Interim Abroad experience.

The itinerary normally includes several home stays in German families. You will experience and explore:

  • German village life near the Dutch border
  • Lübeck, the most beautiful city of Northern Germany
  • Life in Husum, a mid-size city in Schleswig-Holstein with homestays in families
  • The new unified Berlin, with its fascinating history in the 20th century.
  • Lutherstadt Wittenberg in former East Germany with homestays in families
  • Erfurt, one of the most beautiful old cities in Thuringia
  • Goethe's Weimar
  • The Buchenwald concentration camp
  • The Wartburg castle in Eisenach where Luther translated the New Testament.
  • Freiburg and the Black Forest
  • Other regions and places of Germany of your choice during five days of independent travel
