Jerrian (M.D.) and Anna (Terpstra) Van Dellen Scholarship

Background:
This GEO Department scholarship is given by Kenneth J. and Pearl Van Dellen in honor of Ken’s parents, who introduced him to the Creator and the creation. Ken [B.A., biology, Calvin 1958] began taking geology courses in 1962 and taught geology at Macomb Community College 1965-1999.

$1,500
Eligibility:
The scholarship is awarded to a Calvin student with junior or senior status, with a declared major in geology or environmental geology at the time of holding the scholarship. Students must apply to the Geology Department during their sophomore or junior year for the following year. A student is eligible to hold the scholarship for two years. Student applications for the scholarship will be assessed by the departmental geologists on the basis of academic potential, leadership ability, Christian character, and financial need. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher.

Clarence and Irene Menninga Geology Scholarship
Year Established: 1989
Background :
This GEO Department scholarship is given in honor of Clarence Menninga, Calvin's first geology professor. Previously a field camp scholarship, the Menninga Scholarship became an academic scholarship in 2007. Dr. Menninga was hired by Calvin in 1967 for the purpose of developing a geology program for the college. In the fall of 1968, the first Earth Science course was introduced at Calvin, and the first official geology course, Introduction to Physical Geology, was offered in the spring of 1969.

Eligibility:
This academic scholarship is awarded to a Calvin student with junior or senior status, with a declared major in geology or environmental geology at the time of holding the scholarship. This scholarship may also be awarded to a junior/senior enrolling in a Calvin geology field methods course. Students must apply to the Geology Department during their sophomore or junior year for the following year. There is no minimum GPA required. Applications will be assessed by the departmental geologists on the basis of academic potential, leadership ability, Christian character, and financial need.

John and Lillian Van Oosten Scholarship
Year Established:
Background :
This scholarship is a result of a bequest given to Calvin by the late Dr. John and Mrs. Lillian Van Oosten. Dr. Van Oosten spent 42 years in service to the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In the course of his career, he established a worldwide reputation as a fisheries scientist. He authored more than 90 scientific papers. Dr. Van Oosten's major interest throughout his long professional career was research on the Great Lakes and their fisheries. His interests also extended into fishery regulation and management. He was consulted regularly by fishery administrators of the Great Lakes states and belonged to numerous scientific and professional organizations. He was made a Distinguished Service Honorary Member by the American Fisheries Society in 1952, and on January 18, 1962, he received the Distinguished Service Citation of the U.S. Department of the Interior, with gold medal.

Five scholarships of $2600 each.

This Science Division scholarship is awarded to students with junior or senior status, pursuing studies in the natural sciences, including geology and geography.
