Year Established:
Background
:
To
honor Davis Young’s many contributions to the department and its
graduates, we are establishing the Davis A. Young Student Summer Research
Fellowship. Our goal is to raise an endowment to support this fellowship
that will allow students to do research side-by-side with department faculty.
Endowments at Calvin College generate income at 6% of the value of the
endowment fund each year. We have chosen an endowment goal of $60,000
because this would give us a yearly income of $3600, or approximately
the amount needed to support one student for 10 weeks each summer to do
research with a faculty member from the department.
The faculty are
dedicated to the task of training Christian geologists, geographers, and
environmental scientists, and they have involved as many as five students
in research each summer. It is clear from our experiences in graduate
school, environmental engineering firms, and in relief agencies that good
scientists with Christ-centered worldviews are badly needed.
You can aid in continuing
to turn this dedication into concrete opportunities for students, and
at the same time honor the work of Davis Young by making a gift to the
Davis A. Young Student Summer Research Fellowship Endowment.
If you haven’t
already, please consider making a three year pledge. A gift of any amount
will make a difference! Our goal is to raise an endowment of at least
$60,000 over a three-year period. We also hope you will check if your
employer has a matching gift program. In the past 6 months, alumni, friends
of the department, and department faculty have already committed approximately
$30,000 toward this goal! We are extremely pleased and thankful for this
show of support.
