Spring 2009 Field Outings - Check out the latest pictures from this semester's trips!

Geography Majors and Faculty present at the 2009 AAG Conference - Four of our senior geography majors and three geography faculty took part in the American Association of Geographers National Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, over spring break 2009. Nathan Mosurinjohn presented a paper, "Policing against Terrorism Rifle Sniper Attacks with 3D Geospatial Solutions". In an illustrated poster session, David Young reported on "A Student Perspective on Undergraduate Research in Geography". David was also included in the "Voices of Undergraduate Geoscience Research" sponsored by the Geoscience Division of the Council on Undergraduate Research. Scott Jonker and Jenna Beauchamp, each presented posters in different sessions - Scott on "Mapping the Calvin College Ecosystem Preserve", and Jenna on "Creating a Dune Features Inventory (DFI) for Michigan Coastal Dunes".

Geography professors Johnathan Bascom, Deanna van Dijk and Jason VanHorn also made significant contributions to this national conference. Johnathan Bascom gave a talk "Banking on Community: Indigenous Credit Associations in Eritrea". Deanna van Dijk chaired an illustrated poster session at which she presented "Undergraduate Research is Building and Understanding of Lake Michigan Coastal Dunes". Jason VanHorn presented a paper "Spatial Analysis Limitations and extensions to Terrorism Databases", and also chaired this paper session. Students and faculty were also able to take in the rugged beauty of Nevada on several field trips.

Congratulations! to geology emeritus Davis Young and geology professor Ralph Stearley on the publication of their book "The Bible, Rocks and Time: Geological Evidence for the Age of the Earth". A book reception and seminar with Ralph and Davis Young, sponsored by the Calvin Center for Christian Scholarship, took place on November 14.  

 

New GEO Faculty Member! The department is delighted to welcome our newest professor, Dr. James Skillen, who brings to us not only expertise in environmental policy and history, but also extensive knowledge of world coffees. Check out Dr. Skillen's profile on our Faculty & Staff pages.

Young Research Fellowship
The Davis A. Young Student Summer Research Fellowship has been created in recognition of his service to Calvin College. Davis Young retired in June 2004 after 26 years of service to the department.
