If You're Looking for an Interim Course That...
  • Spends half the class time outdoors
  • Involves hiking, observing, measuring, collecting
  • Has no prerequisite to qualify
  • Requires no geology experience
  • Is incredibly low cost
  • Offers a full 4 credits (Interim is usually 3 credits)
  • Meets your Physical World core
  • Investigates mountains, rivers, geysers, minerals, and rocks

Then...

We have the course for you!

We are offering an Introductory Field Geology Interim course to be held in southwestern Montana for 2 weeks directly after Calvin commencement. The course is a fast-paced, intensive, immersion geology experience involving communal living in a retreat setting.

The course is designed for those of you that have no experience in geology and the course carries no prerequisites.

Craters of the Moon NMMorning lecture and labs are followed by afternoon exploration of nearby rocks, rivers, and mountains to apply and expand what you have learned. A road trip will visit Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho and we plan to spend one night and part of 2 days in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Late May is a gorgeous time in Montana with springtime in full flower.

The cost is amazingly low--about $1000 includes just about everything except text and lab book. It includes airfare to Bozeman, room and board, and transportation onsite. The course location is stunning--on the banks of the blue-ribbon Big Hole River with deer, elk, moose and other wildlife in abundance. The retreat facilities are brand-new and beautiful. The course meets the Physical World core requirement at Calvin and is a graded 4 credit offering. Since the course meets in May, you do not need to be on-campus during the January time interim. Although first year students are encouraged to take a DCM class during the January Interim, they may take off the January Interim of their second year in order to take this field course. Another option is to pay extra tuition and take this field course as a Summer Session.

Professors Gerry Van Kooten and Ralph Stearley of the GEO Department will teach the 2008 course. They look forward to introducing you to geology done the right way--in the field. If you have any questions or would like more information please contact Gerry Van Kooten at gkv2(at)calvin.edu
