After he completed a BS and an MA at Kansas State University in 1980 and 1982, Professor Bascom moved to Iowa where he received his PhD in geography from the University of Iowa, 1989.
Professor Bascom taught at East Carolina University for 11 years before joining the GEO department at Calvin in 2000. Twice he has been a visiting lecturer at University of Asmara, and he was once a Research Fellow at Oxford University. Bascom is currently a program advisor for Calvin's Africa and African Diaspora Studies and International Development Studies programs
