Biography
- Hometown: The Netherlands
- Immigrated to Canada with his family at the age of thirteen
- Completed a B.A. in Geography and Planning at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
- Received his PhD in geography from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, 1978
- Taught at Wilfrid Laurier University for seven years
- Taught at University of Toronto
- Joined the GEO department in 1982 as the first full-time PhD geographer at Calvin, hired to develop both geography and environmental studies programs
- Favorite landscapes and places come from his geographical roots and from the venues of his post-commencement geography field trips (with thanks to all the participants!): Amsterdam, Toronto, Britain's Yorkshire, rails-to-trails, and Prince Edward Island
