GIS at Calvin College

The GIS program at Calvin College continues to grow and develop. The GEO department faculty teach courses in cartography and GIS and are engaged in GIS for research and analysis. Our courses are designed to give students theoretical concepts ground in applied practice. Each of our courses include lectures and labratory work and we have state-of-the-art facilities to accomodate advanced geoprocessing and analysis for student use.

Some of the courses taught at Calvin College that include GIS as a primary component are:

Grand Rapids 3-D Urban Model Project

The Grand Rapids, MI skylineWe've created a detailed 3-D urban model of the city of Grand Rapids. We are using a combination of ArcScene, Google Sketch-up Pro, and ArcMap.

Geospatial mapping of Calvin Eco-Preserve

Mapping the Calvin College Eco-PreserveWe are mapping various spatial layers of the eco-preserve on the Calvin College campus for use in teaching and research. We are using a combination of advanced Trimble GPS technology, aerial photogrammetry, and GIS to map various spatial layers throughout the preserve.
