Winter sand traps work better than Leatherman-style
traps when temperatures fall below freezing. The collection tubes
in the Leatherman-style sand traps can freeze in place, making measurement
impossible until warmer weather arrives. The winter sand trap is
designed to work when the ground is frozen; it is entirely above
ground.
Moving sand passes through
the trap opening and collects in a fine mesh inner sleeve. (An inexpensive
and efficient inner sleeve is pantyhose.)
The winter sand traps
are anchored by rods inserted in the ground before it freezes. We
often set up several traps with openings facing different directions
to measure both the amounts and direction of sand movement. |
