Research Methods - Measuring Wind Direction

A wind vane indicates wind direction by pointing into the wind. Our wind vane is connected by cable to a datalogger where the electronic signal indicating vane direction is converted to wind direction and recorded.

Wind direction is always reported as the direction the wind is coming from. Directions may be reported as cardinal directions (north, east, south, west) and their intermediates (southwest, northeast, north-northeast, etc.) or as degrees from north (0 degrees is north, 90 degrees is east, 180 degrees is south, 270 degrees is west, etc.).

Wind direction measurements are used to identify the directions of sand movement.
