Research Methods - Measuring Soil Temperature

Soil temperature probes are buried in the sand to measure ground temperature at 6 depths (0 cm, 3 cm, 6 cm, 12 cm, 25 cm and 50 cm).

The soil temperature measurements at different depths are used to identify the presence and depth of ground freezing in the winter.

Soil temperature array.
Wind erosion exposed the top soil temperature probe and partially-exposed the probe at 3-cm depth.
(Hoffmaster State Park in December 2002.)
