Research Methods - Moisture Content

For moisture content measurements, we collect samples of sand from the ground surface (top 1-2 cm) at beach and dune locations. When the ground is frozen, we use a hammer to chip off pieces of the surface for analysis.

The samples are stored in moisture tins and brought to the lab where they are weighed, dried in an oven, and weighed again. The change in weight is the amount of water that was present in the sample. We report the moisture content as % dry weight.
