Dunes - Foredunes

Foredunes are low, very active dunes that parallel the beach. These dunes are named for their position as the first (fore) dunes inland from the beach. Foredunes are often the smallest and youngest dunes along the Lake Michigan coast.

A foredune may begin as shadow dunes which join together to form an incipient foredune. Depending on conditions, the foredune can grow, stop growing or undergo erosion.
