About Us

Our Programs:

Outside the Classroom:

There are many opportunities outside of the classroom to prepare students for a career or further education.

  • Upper-level students are hired as lab assistants for courses such as Earth Systems, Introduction to Geology, World Regional Geography, Geomorphology, GIS and more.

  • The department hires students to manage the map library, assist with administrative tasks, work on the department website, maintain the Calvin College weather station, and oversee the Calvin College seismographs.

  • There are summer research and academic-year student research opportunities in the department. In recent years, students have studied Eritrean culture and geography with Johnathan Bascom, investigated Lake Michigan coastal dunes with Deanna van Dijk and analyzed perceptions of New Zealand marine resources with Janel Curry.

Faculty:

The department has eight full-time faculty consisting of 2 geologists, a geomorphologist, 4 geographers, and a specialist in earth science education. Faculty Profiles will tell you more about their research and teaching specialties. Please contact the faculty if you want more information about their research or teaching areas. They are happy to hear from you!

Facilities:

Department facilities are made available to students for their studies, research and work as lab or research assistants while at Calvin. Facilities include three teaching laboratories, two research laboratories and a computer laboratory.

Careers in Earth Sciences:

Information on careers in fields related to earth sciences can be found on the careers page.
