Big Sky Geology

Dates: May 21-June 3, 2010
Cost: $1100
Prerequisites: none, fulfills Physical World core
Course Description:

"Big Sky Geology" is an introductory geology course that:

  • Spends half the class time outdoors
  • Involves hiking, observing, measuring, collecting
  • Requires no geology experience
  • Offers a full 4 credits (Interim is usually 3 credits)
  • Is incredibly low cost

Morning lecture and labs are followed by afternoon exploration of nearby rocks, rivers, and mountains to apply and expand what you have learned. A road trip will visit Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho and we plan to spend one night and part of 2 days in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. The course location is stunning--on the banks of the blue-ribbon Big Hole River with deer, elk, moose and other wildlife in abundance. The retreat facilities are new and beautiful. Since the course meets in May, you do not need to be on-campus during the January time interim. Although first year students are encouraged to take a DCM class during the January Interim, they may take off the January Interim of their second year in order to take this field course. Another option is to pay extra tuition and take this field course as a Summer Session.
