Dr. Alice Dreger, “Intersex in Theory, Life, and Practice”
Think everyone is born just-male or just-female? Think again.  This talk will cover the basics of “intersex,” a term used when someone is born with a sex anatomy that doesn’t fit the standards from males or females.  We’ll consider the biological facts of sex development, the recent history of the medical treatment of disorders of sex development, and the reasons for (and successes of) the intersex rights movement.  A Q&A will follow the main talk.  The speaker is a medical historian, ethicist, and patient advocate with over a decade of national intersex activism to her name.

Alice Dreger is Associate Professor of Clinical Medical Humanities and Bioethics at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago.  From 1998-2005 she co-led the intersex Society of North America, a policy and advocacy organization for people born with intersex conditions.  She is the author of two books and the editor of three books on the medical and social treatment of people born with norm-challenging bodies.  Dr. Dreger’s articles and essays have appeared in a wide array of scholarly journals and mainstream publications, including the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and the Chicago Tribune.  She has also appeared as an expert on many programs, including the Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning America, CNN International, NPR, and the BBC.
