Guidelines for Middle School and High School Writing Submissions

Calvin College - April 26, 2007

All students attending the Middle School and High School Writing Workshops are encouraged to submit one piece of their writing with their registration to be entered in a writing contest. These pieces will be judged by the organizing committee, by a selected group of Calvin College writing students, and by members of Western Michigan 's Peninsula Writers Club.

Submissions are due no later than March 21, 2007.

Writing may be submitted in any of the following categories:

Personal experience essay
Poetry
Fiction: Realism
Fiction: Fantasy
Feature Writing/ Journalism
Argumentative essay

Specifications of submissions:

1500 words or less
12 Font (Times New Roman)
Double Spaced
Attach cover form included in the registration materials
Artwork is accepted but will not influence the decision

The judges will be looking for the following characteristics:

  • Creativity and originality: Does the piece feel like an original creation? Is the idea original and unusual?
  • Interesting uses of language: Are we surprised by such things as word choice, the use of metaphor, the mixing together of unusual sentences and sentence structures?
  • Soundness: Is the piece technically correct? Are the paragraphs, sentences, stanzas well structured and understood?
  • Meaning: How does this writer help us to see the world in a new way? How does the writer make this experience universal to all readers?

Awards are provided by Calvin College and Schuler Books for First Place and for Honorable Mention. In addition, for both the Middle School and High School Writers Workshops, the Peninsula Writers will be awarding Golden Pen Awards to the Best in Show—that piece of writing that rises above all others.

All awards will be announced at the conclusion of the Workshops. Students must submit their writing entries before the registration deadline, and the winner must be in attendance to receive the award.

Write well!
