kadir nelson

Renowned artist Kadir Nelson grew up knowing that he was meant to make art. After graduating with honors from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, Nelson received commissions from several major production studios and publishers, including Dreamworks, The New York Times, and Coca-Cola. He continues in his artwork and is well known for his focus on the integrity of the human spirit in his works. Nelson has also illustrated over ten children’s books, including Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom (2006), written by Carole Boston Weatherford, which won the 2007 Caldecott Honor and the 2007 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award. Nelson also won the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award. Other award-winning titles by Nelson include Ellington Was Not a Street (2005), Thunder Rose, and Henry's Freedom Box. His latest book is We Are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball. Calvin College's Center Art Gallery will host an exhibit of Nelson's work titled Beauty of the Spirit: Paintings and Illustrations from March 17 thru April 19, 2008.
