Susan Felch

Education

Professor Felch received her undergraduate degree in music from Wheaton College and also earned her MA in theology from Wheaton. After teaching high school music and English, Professor Felch entered a doctoral program in literature at the Catholic University of America. She received her PhD in 1991 and joined the Calvin College English department in 1992. Professor Felch has served as a mentor for the Lilly Graduate Fellows program, is the Executive Editor of the Independent Works of William Tyndale, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, and is a frequent speaker at conferences and workshops.

Her books include The Collected Works of Anne Vaughan Lock (RETS, 1999); Bakhtin and Religion: A Feeling for Faith (Northwestern UP, 2001) with Paul J. Contino; Elizabeth Tyrwhit’s Morning and Evening Prayers (Ashgate, 2008), for which she won the Josephine A. Roberts Scholarly Edition Award; Elizabeth I and Her Age, with Donald Stump (Norton, 2009), which won the Teaching Edition Award from the Society for the Study of Early Modern Women; Selected Readings of Bible Stories / 圣经故事选读, with Xing Ling (Yunnan UP, 2011); Teaching and Christian Imagination (Eerdmans, 2016) with David I. Smith, a finalist for the Lilly Fellows Program Book Award; and The Cambridge Companion to Literature and Religion (Cambridge UP, 2016). She has also written the Spiritual Biographies of the Seasons series and The Emmaus Readers with Gary Schmidt (2002-2009).

In 2009, she won the Josephine A. Roberts Scholarly Edition Award for her book Elizabeth Tyrwhit's Morning and Evening Prayers (Ashgate, 2008), and in 2000, she received an honorable mention for her first book, The Collected Works of Anne Vaughan Lock (RETS, 1999). Elizabeth I and Her Age, with Donald Stump (Norton, 2009), won the Teaching Edition Award from the Society for the Study of Early Modern Women in 2010. All three books have been recognized as “significant and authoritative contributions to the field of early modern scholarship.” She has also won numerous academic grants and praise for her work in faculty development.
