Assigning Writing

The primary focus of English 101 is on expository writing (under which heading we include argumentative and analytical writing). We also believe that students should write frequently. Such writing may include journals or other informal writing (which may or may not be graded) as well as exercises in paragraphing, sentence combining, and revising. English 101 instructors assign between four and six essays; those who require fewer final products typically require extensive work on revision-the submission of multiple drafts, practice of various revision strategies, or thorough revisions of essays after the instructor has commented on them. In addition, most instructors assign one long essay (usually between six to ten pages) that requires significant research, and many instructors assign an essay as part of the final examination.

Throughout the course, the generation of content should receive attention fully as much as matters of rhetorical modes and proper form. Ideas for content may come from a collection of essays, from a work of literature, or from other sources which engage the student's intellect, imagination, and faith. In English 101, students, by growing in their ability to write, should also grow in their ability to think clearly.
