Exemption Exam
Freshmen, sophomores, and transfer students may
apply to take an exemption examination for English 101. If you pass
the exam, you will be exempt from the English 101 requirement, but
you will not receive credit for the course. Calvin College charges
$15.00 for this examination, and you may take this exam only once.
The English Department offers the exam once each
semester. For the 2006/07 academic year, the exam dates are Wednesday,
October 4 and Wednesday, February 28. The exam is scheduled from
3:30-6:30 PM. Students must register for the exemption exam by Monday,
September 25 for the fall exam and by Monday, February 19 for the
spring exam. The registration form is available from the Registrar's
Office (or may be downloaded from the following web page: http://www.calvin.edu/admin/registrar/policy/deptex.htm
To register, please contact the Director of English 101, Professor
John Netland.
The exemption examination is made up of two parts:
a grammar test and an essay. You can take up to ninety minutes to
complete each section. Members of the English 101 Committee score
the grammar test and evaluate the essays. The committee passes grammar
tests that score a B+ or higher and essays that demonstrate writing
skills comparable to those displayed in essays which at the end
of English 101 achieve a grade of B+ or higher. You must pass both
parts of the examination to be exempt from English 101. Because
this is a rigorous exam, you should discuss your preparation for
the exam with Professor John Netland. He can help you make an informed
decision about your preparation for the exam. |
