Students - Engineering Scholarships

A list of each scholarship with a summary of the criteria is listed below. The application form for Named Engineering Scholarships are available on-line every year beginning January 1. Please go to KnightVision to complete the application. All current students who will be attending here next year are encouraged to apply!

Applications need to be completed and submitted every year by March 1. Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are given in conjunction with another Department.

The Andy J. Egan Company Scholarship

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled or planning to enroll as a full time student at Calvin College.
  • Have a high school cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher if a prospective first year student. Have a college cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher if a current Calvin College student.

Preference will be given first to children or grandchildren of Andy J. Egan Company employees and second to other students. Preference will also be given to first year students and second to other class levels. Financial need is not required, but may be considered if there are more qualified candidates than there are scholarships available.

The A.M.D.G. Scholarship*

This scholarship is awarded in conjunction with the Art Department and the Pre-architecture Committee. Students interested in this scholarship should apply through the Art Department.*

A. Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current Calvin College student planning to enroll full time the following year.
  • Be entering their sophomore, junior or senior year at Calvin College.
  • Be enrolled in the pre architecture program.
  • Have already taken Engineering 103 and have been recommended by the Engineering 103 professor.

B. If the above criteria are met the following may also be considered (listed in order or preference):

  • Preference to ethnic minority or international students.
  • Preference to women.
  • Preference to non-Christian Reformed Church members.
  • Preference will be based on financial need.

The Alto Precision in Honor of
Willis M. Clark Scholarship*

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a prospective student planning to enroll full time at Calvin College the following year.
  • Be planning to pursue an Engineering degree.
  • Financial need is required.

Preference will be given to a student from South Christian High School, Grand Rapids, MI. Second preference will be given to a student from Calvin Christian High School, Grandville, MI.

*This scholarship requires an application AND a recommendation form. Please select the above links to print them and mail them to the address provided on the form.

The Berg Nuclear Energy Scholarship

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current Calvin College student planning to enroll the following year.
  • Be entering their junior year.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.3 or higher.
  • Be pursuing an Engineering degree.
  • Financial need as defined by government programs is not required, but there should be some evidence that the scholarship is needed to help meet educational expenses.
  • Demonstrate Christian character and an ability to lead.
  • Show an interest in a career in nuclear energy.
  • Be available for a summer internship at a nuclear power plant.
  • Show through written work (essay) why the student is interested in nuclear power.

The Bosscher Family Interim Scholarship

Candidates for this scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current Calvin College student planning to enroll full time the following year.
  • Financial need is required.
  • Demonstrate that the interim course is directly related and beneficial to the program/major in which they are currently enrolled.

This scholarship is intended to be awarded to students who otherwise would not be able to afford to go on an off-campus interim trip, or who would not otherwise even consider going. Two scholarships will be awarded to students majoring in Engineering.

The James Bosscher Engineering Scholarship

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be an enrolled freshman in the engineering program at Calvin College.
  • Demonstrate outstanding achievement and potential in high school.
  • Special consideration given to North American ethnic minority students.
  • The award is renewable for the sophomore year based on the first year's college performance and continuation in the engineering program.

The James Bosscher SAE Engineering Scholarship

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be an enrolled freshman in the engineering program at Calvin College.
  • Demonstrate outstanding achievement and potential in high school.
  • The award is renewable for the sophomore year based on the first year's college performance and continuation in the engineering program.

The C.J. Byeman Memorial Scholarship

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current Calvin College student planning to enroll full time the following year.
  • Be entering their junior or senior year.
  • Be either an Engineering or Business (including Economics) major.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Be a resident of any of the following states: Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, or Alaska.
  • Demonstrate a love for God and willingness to serve others.
  • Financial need is not required.

The Calvin Engineering Scholarship

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be entering the junior year of the BSE program at Calvin.
  • Have attended Calvin at least one year before receiving the scholarship.
  • Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher at Calvin.
  • Be enrolled as a full-time student while receiving this scholarship.
  • Financial need as defined by government programs is not required, but there should be some evidence that the scholarship is needed to help meet educational expenses.

If the above requirements are met, personal integrity and level of interest and activity in the Engineering may be considered.

The Calvin Junior Engineering Scholarship

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be entering the junior year of the BSE program at Calvin.
  • Have attended Calvin at least one year before receiving the scholarship.
  • Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher at Calvin.
  • Be enrolled as a full-time student while receiving this scholarship.
  • Financial need as defined by government programs is not required, but there should be some evidence that the scholarship is needed to help meet educational expenses.

If the above requirements are met, personal integrity and level of interest and activity in the Engineering may be considered.

The Chemical Engineering Alumni Scholarship*

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current student at Calvin College planning to enroll full time the following year.
  • Be entering their junior or senior year.
  • Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Pursuing a Chemical Engineering Concentration.
  • Financial need is required.

The Civil Engineering Scholarship

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current Calvin College student planning to enroll the following year.
  • Be entering their junior or senior year.
  • Be pursuing an Engineering degree with a Civil Engineering concentration.
  • Financial need as defined by government programs is not required, but there should be some evidence that the scholarship is needed to help meet educational expenses.

The D & D Building Scholarship Fund*

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled or planning to enroll as a full time student at Calvin College.
  • Be entering their junior or senior year.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Preference will be given first to children of D & D employees and second to other students. If there are more children of D & D employees who qualify than there are scholarships available, preference will be given to prospective freshmen. If all the above criteria are met, other factors may be considered including academic record, participation in church, community, and school activities outside the classroom, and financial need.

The Joseph and Deanne Daverman Family Scholarship

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be entering their sophomore, junior or senior year at Calvin College.
  • Be enrolled in a pre-architecture or engineering program.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Financial need as defined by government programs is not required, but there should be some evidence that the scholarship is needed to help meet educational expenses.

The Brian L. De Wall Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Gordon and Joan De Wall in memory of their son Brian, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident during his senior year at Calvin. Scholarships are awarded to students who are entering the senior year in the Mechanical Engineering Program at Calvin; live life with a positive attitude and a good sense of humor; demonstrate Christian character; and demonstrate the potential to make a positive impact in their work both professionally and as a Christian. A GPA of 2.8 or higher is required.

The Jack and Eleanor Elenbaas Family Engineering Scholarship

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current Calvin College student planning to enroll the following year.
  • Be entering their junior or senior year.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.2 or higher.
  • Be pursuing an Engineering degree.
  • Financial need as defined by government programs is not required, but there should be some evidence that the scholarship is needed to help meet educational expenses.

The Gentex Corporation Engineering Scholarship

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current Calvin College student planning to enroll the following year.
  • Be entering their junior or senior year.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.2 or higher.
  • Be pursuing an Engineering degree with either a Mechanical Engineering concentration or Electrical/Computer Engineering concentration.
  • Must exhibit leadership skills
  • Must exhibit hands-on technical skills and hobbies.
  • Financial need as defined by government programs is not required.

The Bruce and Alice Klanderman Scholarship*

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current Calvin College student planning to enroll the following year.
  • Be entering their junior or senior year.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.8 or higher, which recognizes achievement in all courses of study.
  • Be pursuing Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a Chemical Engineering major.
  • Financial need is not required.

The Roger L. and Marcia L. Lamer Family Engineering Scholarship

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a prospective student planning to enroll full time at Calvin College the following year.
  • Have an ACT composite of 26 or above.
  • Have attended a West Michigan Christian high school.
  • Must demonstrate personal integrity and initiative for success in their field of study.
  • Financial need as defined by government programs is not required, but there should be some evidence that the scholarship is needed to help meet educational expenses.

Preference will be given to students pursuing a Civil Engineering concentration. Application Form and Recommendation Form are due on Feb. 28 each year.

The Francis and Trena Lieuwen Scholarship

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current Calvin College student planning to enroll full time the following year.
  • Be entering their junior year.
  • Be majoring in Engineering.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.6 or higher.
  • Financial need as defined by government programs is not required, but there should be some evidence that the scholarship is needed to help meet educational expenses.

Preference will be given to students who have a history of and ongoing interest in serving others through volunteering and/or through missions.

The Paul W. Newhof Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Paul W. Newhof who was a practical man of great faith who would never turn down a request to serve the Lord with his civil and structural engineering expertise. Mr. Newhof was involved in several mission projects and was also interested in helping missionaries by using his engineering skills. Candidates for the scholarship must

  • be entering their junior or senior year
  • have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • majoring in the Civil Engineering program

Preference will be given to a child of a missionary who meets the stated criteria; otherwise the scholarship will be given to an engineering student with some interest in using their education to support mission work.

The Pfizer Scholarship*

This scholarship is funded by the Pfizer Corporation with the purpose to attract, encourage, and support students interested in pursuing careers in the chemical sciences by giving them financial support. Eligible students must be entering their junior or senior year of students with a major in chemistry, biochemistry or chemical engineering, and must have a GPA of 3.3 or higher. The Robert J. Reimink, Prein & Newhof Scholarship

First preference for this scholarship will be for direct descendants of Robert J. Reimink. No class level or specific major will be required. Recipients need only to make satisfactory academic progress to have the scholarship renewed. Siblings attending Calvin simultaneously will have the award split evenly among those enrolled.

If no descendents are identified candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current student at Calvin entering the junior or senior year.
  • Be pursuing a program in Civil Engineering.
  • Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  • Financial need as defined by government programs is not required, but there should be some evidence that the scholarship is needed to help meet educational expenses.

The Charles and Kay Spoelhof Engineering Scholarship

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current Calvin College student planning to enroll the following year.
  • Entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year.
  • Have attended Calvin at least one year before receiving the scholarship.
  • Have a GPA of 2.7 or higher and be in good standing in the Engineering Department
  • Be majoring in Engineering.
  • Financial need as defined by government programs is not required, but there should be some evidence that the scholarship is needed to help meet educational expenses.

Preference will be given to an engineering student involved in some type of international activity; i.e. international internship, international engineering study program abroad, etc.

The Elmer and Marie Van Beek Family Scholarship

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current Calvin College student planning to enroll full time the following year.
  • Be entering their junior or senior year.
  • Have a physical challenge or learning disability and be actively involved in the Student Academic Services program at Calvin OR have special needs/challenges due to cultural adjustments.
  • Be majoring in Engineering
  • Financial need as defined by government programs is not required, but there should be some evidence that the scholarship is needed to help meet educational expenses.

The Anthony VanderLugt Memorial Scholarship

Candidates for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current Calvin College student planning to enroll the following year.
  • Be entering their junior or senior year.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.2 or higher.
  • Be pursuing an Engineering degree.
  • Financial need as defined by government programs is not required, but there should be some evidence that the scholarship is needed to help meet educational expenses.

Preference will be given to an first generation college student.

The Van Randwyk Family Scholarship

Candidates for this scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current Calvin College student planning to enroll full time the following year.
  • Be entering their sophomore year.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Be pursuing an Engineering major.
  • Financial need as defined by government programs is not required, but there should be some evidence that the scholarship is needed to help meet educational expenses.
