ASCE

The Calvin College Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) was chartered in 1991. Joining the student chapter is free to all students interested in civil engineering. By joining the student chapter you can attend West Michigan American Society of Civil Engineers Branch meetings, tour current project sites, perform community service projects, and participate in the Student/Mentor program. For a small fee of $20 you can become a National Student Member of ASCE, with which you get ASCE periodicals, scholarship eligibility, and a variety of job placement resources.

At the West Michigan Branch meetings you have opportunities to hear presentations about on-going civil engineering projects in the West Michigan community and elsewhere. Tours for the student chapter have included the Grand Rapids Public Museum and the Amway Catalog Facilities, both while under construction. For a community service project the student chapter has helped construct a house for the local Habitat for Humanity Chapter.

The Student/Mentor program has been created to help the West Michigan Branch and Calvin College Student Chapter build a strong relationship between the groups. Students are able to gain knowledge from the experiences of engineers, giving the students a broader view of the field of Civil Engineering and establishing valuable contacts for both student and engineer.
