In order to accurately estimate the cost of constructing the green roof the team determined that a structural model of the new commons building would be needed. This model could be used to determine the additional structural elements required to support the green roof. To this end, the team decided to model the southern half of the new commons building. This included the area on which the green roof would be placed as well as conventionally roofed areas immediately adjacent to it. In this way, the team determined that they could create a model that would enable them to find the increase in structural steel without taking the time necessary to model the entire structure. It was then decided that the team would create this model in the program RAMSTEEL that would allow them to create two steel designs, one for the commons building with the currently envisioned roofing system and another with the green roof system.
