The goal of this project is to recommend safety and recreational improvements for the Village of Augusta located in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. Then we will design the components of that recommendation which fit within our constraints of time, ability, interest, and importance to the residents of Augusta.

PPFS Report

We submitted the final PPFS Report on Monday, December 10. View it online.

The report outlines the background for the project as well as a section for each individual project proposed to us by the Village of Augusta. The report also outlines the individual projects that we will design next semester and the method that we used to select them.

The Criteria we used to select the projects are shown along the top of the table below. The projects are shown on the left side. The table is an average of the choices by all group members. The most important criteria to us is the amount of engineering work necessary for the design. Engineering in the context of this class is engineering design. Although engineers would perform design for all of these projects most of the work is not considered engineering when viewed through the requirements of the class.

After developing this decision matrix we decided that the bridge related projects were too complicated for us to complete in one semester, so although they are important we will not be designing them.

Rec Plan

The rec plan was presented to the village council on March 3, 2008. It is going through its public review process and being packaged by the village to submit to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. We prepared three posters to be displayed in the village library explaining the plan. The posters can be seen here.

Individual Project Design

Traffic on M-96

We have approached the pedestrian safety problem from the perspectives of the a driver and a pedestrian. The Village's complaint was that pedestrians do not feel safe crossing the road. Stopping sight distance calculations show that pedestrians in the crosswalk nearest to the bridge are safe when vehicles are traveling under 45 mph. Pedestrian sight distance calculations show that a pedestrian cannot see an approaching vehicle which would be in the crosswalk, if it did not brake from the 35 mph speed limit, before they were safely across.

To increase pedestrian safety, we are designing "bulb-outs" which decrease the pedestrian crossing length. They are also believed to decrease a driver's willingness to travel at higher rates of speed by increasing "side friction" and decreasing available pavement width.

Determined by time allowance, we will also be looking at constructability constraints such as MDOT's design standards, drainage issues.

Boat Launch/Landing/Dock/Parking

We have decided to use the west side of the Kalamazoo River, east of the Village, south of the M-96 bridge as the best location for our non-motorized boat launch. We are designing according ADA code specifications. We are in the processing of creating drawings in CADD and Google Sketchup.

Riverfront Trail

We have laid out a path using contour and property line data. We have decided to use asphalt to surface most of the path, but to use boardwalk where we are able to mitigate the impact of constructing in a wetland. We are trying to determine the load specifications which will control the structural design aspects of the the boardwalk and asphalt trails.

Trout Stream

Currently, all modeling for the trout stream section has been completed. The model is currently being reviewed for accuracy. The current design is to place triangular obstructions along the bank of the creek to direct the flow. This design is waiting to be checked by another team member. We have also completed an AutoCAD drawing showing the locations of the deflectors. We are still working on calculating the quantities of labor and materials necessary to construct the deflectors but hope to be completed soon.

Previously we have obtained survey information from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality used for the flood insurance study in the Village of Augusta. We have entered all of the cross sections into an Excel sheet and have prepared the HEC-RAS model.
