Team 4: Cooling Calvin Cleanly
The goals of this project include designing an efficient sustainable HVAC system for a suite in Calvin's new dorm wing, designing a method to educate the Calvin Community about sustainable HVAC, and having both designs approved and constructed in the new residence hall addition to the Kalsbeek-Huizenga dorm. A drawing of the residence hall addition floorplan is below.
This system is intended to help support the "Living and Learning" environment that is currently encouraged in each of the dorms. The benefit to the "Living and Learning" environment will be a data collection and display system which will allow students to study how a Geothermal HVAC system operates in comparison to Calvin's current HVAC system (a network of boilers and chillers). An informational kiosk will be constructed in the main lobby of the dorm wing entrance where students can see live performance data from each HVAC system, learn about how these systems operate, learn about the established intentional living and learning communities in the dorm, and find information about other aspects of the dorm and its environmental surroundings and social or spiritual opportunities.
