Prior to windmills, sluices, and dikes people in the northern part of the country found protection from flooding by building refuge mounds called terps. Some of these mounds eventually supported entire towns. They reached heights greater than 4 meters. Often a church is found at the center of a terp. We start this excursion with a visit to a terp musuem in Ezinge in the province of Groningen. We then travel to a number of these dwelling mounds.
