Course Details

The first day of the course includes a geographic and cultural orientation to the Netherlands and its history. All other days are field trips. Each trip includes a briefing the night before, interpretation en route, topographic maps, and study sheets. Students complete a study assignment for each field excursion. See Itinerary for more details about the excursions. To gain a more in-depth understanding of Dutch culture, students will spend part of the first weekend with a Dutch family. The course provides CCE core credit.

Our accommodations are in a group accommodation center in the town of Broek in Waterland only 10 km north of Amsterdam. All students receive ample cash (included in the course fee) for purchasing groceries. From the facility there is easy access to the bus/tram/train network, making it easy to visit the many sites of interest in the Amsterdam vicinity and the rest of Europe.

Seven and a half free days (including two 3-day weekends) are built into the schedule. These may be used for individual or group travel to places of interest or to visit friends or relatives in the Netherlands or elsewhere in Europe. Students can easily take trips as far away as Paris or London on the three day weekends. Moneys for such travel are not built into the budget and are the responsibility of the student.

The estimated maximum cost for 2013 is around $3,350. (Usually students get $100-$200 back at the end of the course). This cost includes ALL transportation, lodging, and food expenses for a 25 day experience. Everyone receives a daily food stipend and is responsible for preparing their own meals. Modern kitchen facilities are available.

Students who already receive need-based financial aid are able to receive additional aid for an off-campus Interim. Students currently living on campus recieve a rebate on January's room and board fee.
