Christians in Engineering & Technology Announcements Newsletter September 2004 Contents: - Call For Papers for Special Symposium on Technology at ASA - Proceedings of CEEC 2004 now available - About this email distribution --------------------------------------------------------------------- Call For Papers for Special Symposium on Technology at ASA ========================================================== Call for Papers for the Special Symposium on Technology at the Annual Meeting of the American Scientific Affiliation Messiah College, Grantham, Pennsylvania August 6-8, 2005 The American Scientific Affiliation (ASA) is an organization of Christians in the sciences and related fields. Our members are committed to understanding the relationship of science and the Christian faith. Each of the annual meetings of the ASA has a general theme. In 2005, the theme will be Alternate Energy, Resources, Conservation, and the Environment. As part of this effort the Affiliation of Christian Engineers and Scientists in Technology (C.E.S.T.) is sponsoring a Special Symposium entitled Technology: the Solution, or the Problem? For this Symposium, technology will be understood in a broad interdisciplinary context: (a ) skills, knowledge, and procedures for making and doing useful things; (b) a special form of knowledge that is compatible with science and controllable by the scientific method and producing some practical end; (c) the defining mark of human beings; and/or (d) the definitive characteristic of modern society. Presentations are solicited for the Special Symposium on Technology, and/or for a Poster Session. The presentations should be suitable for a general technical audience and of approximately twenty-five minutes in length including discussion. They should address topics such as how technology helps us fulfill the Biblic al mandates of dominion, stewarding, justice, caring, and healing. Unintended consequences, emergent properties, technology and economics, risk and risk management, and using technology to solve problems resulting from technology (such as energy supply) are also topics of interest. Please submit proposed titles and abstracts of 350 words maximum by February 11, 2005 to the ASA office at the following web site: http://129.82.76.41.591/asa_p resentations/applications.html. Also send a copy to the Symposium organizer, Dr. Jack Swearengen at jcnlswear@sbcglobal.net.
