2004 ASEE Annual Conference
Liberal Education Division Program
1461 - Writing and Communication I
Mon 6/21 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM
This session focuses on the conventions and rhetoric of communication in different
engineering disciplines as well as strategies for bringing writing into the
classroom. The presenters discuss research into various modes of communication
that characterize the engineering workplace and ways to include written and
oral communication activities into engineering courses.
1661 - Technological Literacy I
Mon 6/21 4:30 PM - 6:00 PM
This session addresses the issue of technological literacy for non-technical
students. Engineers are expected to consider the global and social dimensions
of engineering practice, however non-engineers are frequently uninformed about
technology. Additionally students beginning engineering study need to establish
a broad base of technical understanding prior to specialized study.
1761 - Technological Literacy II
Mon 6/21 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM
This session addresses the issue of technological literacy for non-technical
students and also the problem of expanding the realm of issues that engineers
would consider as technological. This session includes cultural impacts on engineering
design, an analysis of technological bias, and results from technological literacy
course for non-engineers.
2161 - Social Impacts of Nanoscale Engineering
Tues 6/22 7:00 AM - 8:15 AM
Nanoscale science and engineering will result in societal implications. The
role of the Humanities and Social Sciences in identifying and educating engineers
about these implications will be addressed.
2261 - LED Business Meeting Breakfast
Tues 6/22 8:30 AM - 10:15 AM
During the business meeting of the Liberal-Education Division, attendees conduct
the annual meeting of members of the division.
2461 - Humanities and Social Sciences & EC 2000
Tues 6/22 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM
This session examines issues and opportunities presented by EC2000. It
will feature focus statements on core curricula, potential links in
Engineering and Humanities, administrative strategies, and an update
on the Strategic Plan composed at the University of Virginia in 2002
under NSF support. Presentations followed by open discussion from
floor.
2540 - Engineering Ethics Paper Session
Tues 6/22 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM
Engineering Ethics Papers Session. LED is cosponsor (EECC is the Sponsor)
2661 - Writing and Communication II
Tues 6/22 4:30 PM - 6:00 PM
This session focuses on methods for incorporating written and oral
communication tasks into engineering courses. Presenters will offer
concrete strategies for bringing writing into the technical classroom
and suggest ways that writing can help students learn to be both
better writers and better engineers.
3161 - Service Learning in Engineering
Wed 6/23 7:00 AM - 8:15 AM
The session examines service learning in an engineering context. It
will begin with a video on the service learning program at Rose-Hulman
Institute of Technology. Students and faculty discuss projects that
they undertook and what they learned from them. A panel of service
learning practitioners both engineers and liberal arts.
3261 - Ethics & HSS in Engineering
Wed 6/23 8:30 AM - 10:15 AM
This session focuses on ways to bring ethics, humanities, and the
social sciences into the technical classroom. Engineering education
activities addressing ABET Criterion 3 outcomes: f, g, h, and j, fall
within the sphere of humanities and social sciences (ethics,
communication, broad education, impact of engineering, and knowledge
of contemporary issues).
3461 - ABET Criterion 4 and Liberal Education
Wed 6/23 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM
This session will showcase integrated capstone design experiences that
incorporate a broadly multidisciplinary approach, i.e., the humanities
and social sciences as well as a mix of engineering disciplines. It
will explore the challenges of meeting ABET Criterion 4 and the ways
in which liberal education can enrich multidisciplinary design
experiences.
3561 - Entrepreneurial/Innovative Communication
Wed 6/23 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM
Innovative and novel approaches to engineering communication are
reported. Also addressed are issues involved in workplace
communication related to entrepreneurial activities.
3661 - Global Issues in Engineering Education
Wed 6/23 4:30 PM - 6:00 PM
Global issues affect engineering education in multiple and diverse
ways. Engineering students will work in a global workplace, and the
focus of this session is on helping engineering educators better
prepare their students. Topics related to ABET criterion 3h are
addressed: understanding engineering in a global and societal context.
