1998 Winner: Heinz Luegenbiehl
The Liberal Education Division of the American Society for Engineering Education
is pleased to present the 1998 Sterling Olmsted Award to Heinz Luegenbiehl, Professor
of Philosophy and Technology Studies. This award is made in recognition of the
many contributions of Prof. Luegenbiehl, as an educator and lecturer, as a contributor
to ASEE programs and to the Liberal Education division in particular, and as a
contributor to the literature, especially on ethics in the practice of engineering.
Heinz's academic courses bridge the humanities and various professional cultures,
including examples titled business ethics, military ethics, engineering ethics,
bioethics, and computers and ethics, wherein he has vigorously demonstrated by
cases and examples not only the applicability, but the centrality, of ethics in
good professional practices. His publications have appeared in corresponding domains
such as the Journal of Systems and Software, Engineering Education, Social Theory
and Practice, Business and Professional Ethics, The American Society of Mechanical
Engineers, and Technology and Culture, His work has been broadly recognized and
supported by agencies including the National Science Foundation, the National
Endowment for the Humanities, and the Fulbright Senior Scholar Program, as well
as various university and corporate sponsors. Born in Germany, it was perhaps
natural that his bi-disciplinary undergraduate formation included both Philosophy
and Germans with his subsequent PhD from Purdue University involving a stay at
the University of Heidelberg. More recently, his visiting appointments in Japan
at Nagoya as a Fulbright Professor and at Kanazawa Institute of Technology as
Professor of Engineering Ethics exemplify his broad, continuing commitment to
the multicultural context of engineering and a longstanding awareness of the global
impact and importance of ethics in professional lives. Finally, his capable LED
administrative activities have included the divisional posts of Secretary-treasurer
and Division Chair, and of Annual Meeting Program Chair. For this broad and sustained
involvement with engineering education as philosopher, ethicist, and humanist,
the Liberal Education Division is honored to celebrate a long time contributor
with its Sterling Olmsted Award.
