1997 Winner: Barbara Olds

The LIBERAL EDUCATION DIVISIONof the AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR ENGINEERING EDUCATION is pleased to present the 1997 STERLING OLMSTED AWARD to Barbara M. Olds in recognition of her career of "making significant contributions in the teaching and administering of Liberal Education in Engineering Education."

The selection Committee commends Barbara M. Olds, professor and administrator. Dr. Olds received her B.A. from Stanford University, and an M.A. and the PhD. From the University of Denver, all in English. After teaching at the St. Thomas Theological Seminary in Denver for a number of years, she has been a distinguished member of the faculty at the Colorado School of Mines for fifteen years, where she currently serves as the Principal Tutor of the McBride Honors Program for the Engineers and Professor of Liberal Arts and International Studies. She previously served as the Director of the EPICS (Engineering Practices Introductory Course Sequence) Program.

During her career, Dr. Olds has contributed significantly to the cause of engineering education, both at the Colorado School of Mines and nationally. At CSM she has been a project director for Department of Education FIPSE and Proctor and Gamble Fund funded projects to integrate technical and liberal learning including an integrated freshman program, a program linking courses in Chemical Engineering and Humanities, and a Multidisciplinary Senior Design Program. She is the chair of CSM's assessment committee and helped to develop and implement a portfolio assessment program at the school. Her work has been honored with the Brown Innovative Teaching Grant and the Amoco Outstanding Teaching Award at CSM, and she was named the CSM Faculty Senate Distinguished Lecturer for 1993-94.

Dr. Olds contributions to the American Society for Engineering Educations have been numerous. She had served as Chair, Program Chair, and Secretary-Treasurer of the Liberal Education Division over a ten-year period. She was named the ASEE Rocky Mountain Region Outstanding Campus Engineering Educator in 1992 and one of her workshops received the Helen Plant Award at the 1992 ASEE Frontiers in Education Conference. She has published many papers and given numerous presentations at engineering conferences, as well as at conferences in her own discipline.

Dr. Olds is widely recognized to be an innovative leader in the movement to connect the liberal arts to engineering education. For her many contributions to the ASEE and to liberal education, the Liberal Education Division of the ASEE is pleased to present its 1997 Sterling Olmsted Award to Barbara M. Olds of the Colorado School of Mines.
