The Liberal Education Division of the American Society for Engineering Education
is pleased to present the 1996 Sterling Olmstead Award to Jerry W. Gravander
in recognition of his career of "making significant contributions in the
teaching and administering of Liberal Education in Engineering Education."
Dr. Gravander received a B.S. in chemistry from the Illinois Institute of Technology,
a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, and a Ph.D.
in philosophy from the University of Texas at Austin. He has been a distinguished
member of the faculty and administration at Clarkson University for 21 years.
He has taught a variety of courses in philosophy, ethics and environmental studies
as well as science, technology and society. He has published numerous articles
on engineering education, the relationship of philosophy and technology, and
engineering ethics. Dr. Gravander was appointed associate dean of Liberal Studies
at Clarkson in 1982, and since that time has also served as executive officer
of the Liberal Studies Center and special assistant to the president for long-range
planning.
Since 1994, he has served as the interim dean of the faculty of Liberal Studies.
During 1990-91, Dr. Gravander was an American Council on Education fellow at
the University of Central Florida.
As a longtime member of the Liberal Education Division of ASEE, Dr. Gravander
has been instrumental to the continuing well-being of the division. At various
times he has served on the division's executive committee and chaired the division's
By-Laws Revision Committee. From 1978 to 1991 he served as the editor of the
Division's journal, the Liberal Studies Educator. He also served as secretary
of the St. Lawrence Section of ASEE and as program co-chair. He was the recipient
of a Centennial Certificate from ASEE, as well as receiving a commendation award
from the St. Lawrence Section.
Dr. Gravander has also been active in other organizations. He was president of the national Humanities and Technology Association and chair of the Committee on Humanities and the Professions of the National Association for Humanities Education. He has served as president of the Potsdam Central School District Board of Education, as ruling elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Potsdam, and as president of the Potsdam Figure Skating Club. For his many contributions to ASEE, to liberal education and to his community, the Liberal Education Division is pleased to present its 1996 Sterling Olmsted Award to Jerry W. Gravander.
