1994 Winner: Herman A. Estrin

The LIBERAL EDUCATION DIVISION of the AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR ENGINEERING EDUCATION is pleased to present the 1994 STERLING OLMSTED AWARD to HERMAN A. ESTRIN in recognition of his career of "Making significant contributions in the teaching and administering of Liberal Education in Engineering Education."

The Selection Committee commends Herman A. Estrin, teacher of English, journalism and technical writing. Dr. Estrin, a distinguished teacher of English for over forty years, has provided thousands of students with an important first step toward career success and has imbued them with a love language and literature. He has spent his life teaching people how to write and speak "good American English correctly and effectively." For the last quarter century he has also led the New Jersey Writers Conference; he also established the New Jersey Hall of Fame. Dr. Estrin is a life member of ASEE and has made numerous presentations at the national conferences, starting in 1950. He continues to offer the extremely successful workshop on Writing and Publishing in Scientific/Technical Journals at ASEE.

The author of more than 400 educational and scholarly articles and fifteen books on various aspects of education, technical writing, student affairs, poetry, Dr. Estrin has received numerous awards for his teaching and service, both at home and abroad. He embodies the qualities of Chaucer's clerk who would both "gladly learn" and "gladly teach." For his many contributions to ASEE and to the engineering profession, the Liberal Education Division is pleased to award its 1994 Sterling Olmsted Award to Herman A. Estrin.
