The LIBERAL EDUCATION DIVISION of the AMERICAN SOCIETY FRO ENGINEERING EDUCATION is pleased to present the 1993 STERLING OLMSTED AWARD to SAMUEL C. FLORMAN in recognition of his career of "Making significant contributions in the teaching and administering of Liberal Education in Engineering Education."
The Selection Committee commends Samuel C. Florman, engineer, manager, and author, for his leadership in advocating humanistic studies within engineering, and for articulating the values of the profession of engineering to our society as a whole. In his four major books and many articles, Samuel C. Forman represents to us teaching in our various disciplines the full range of professional education and formation needed but often ignored by us and by our students. In crisp, articulate prose always bolstered b current data and relevant quotations, he has reminded us of crucial issues of education, status and satisfaction which characterize engineering as a profession worth pursuing and capable of conferring great contributions. His books have celebrated the joy of creativity at the heart of what makes engineering fun, and have also countered the strident voices of those who would blame all the ills of our day on the consequences of expressing that creativity.
For these contributions to enriching our culture as engineers and educators, achieved while fully engaged in the profession of construction engineering, the Liberal Education Division is pleased to award its 1993 Sterling Olmsted Award, in the year of the Centennial of the American Society for Engineering Education, to Samuel C. Florman, exemplar of what it means to be both Civil Engineer and Civilized Engineer.
