Letter from the LED chair

This message brings news of the Liberal Education Division of ASEE. The complete minutes of the June, 2000 LED business meeting are posted on the LED Web page at http://engr.calvin.edu/aseeled/.

From now on, the LED newsletter will be electronic. Every time a new issue is posted on the LED Web page, a notice will be sent out to all LED members through the LED listserv. The notice will offer highlights from the newsletter; to read the full document, you will need to go to the LED Web page.

Steve VanderLeest has taken over combined responsibilities as the LED Editor/Webmaster/Listserv Manager. If you have material for the newsletter or know of Web-based material that should be linked to the LED home page, please let Steve know.

We will be getting an early start on choosing this year's Olmsted Award winner. Heinz Luegenbiehl (Heinz.Luegenbiehl@rose-hulman.edu) will chair the award committee and will soon be sending out a request for nominations.

Barbara Olds (bolds@mines.colorado.edu) and Nick Steneck (nsteneck@umich.edu) have agreed to lead a project on the Definition and Goals of Liberal Learning in Engineering Education. Their final product will be a white paper that will reflect the consensus of LED members and be produced through a collaborative email discussion of the topic. To avoid unnecessarily cluttering members' mailboxes, they will create a separate email list for that discussion. They will send a message to all LED members letting them know how they can participate in the discussion.

Jerry Gravander (gravander@darius.clarkson.edu) has agreed to head up an effort to revise the LED bylaws, which are long overdue for revision. In some cases, we need to modify the bylaws so that they reflect actual practice in the division. In other cases, we need to make decisions about the terms of various offices. The By-Laws Revision Committee includes Jerry Gravander (chair), Mel Cherno, and Lance Schacterle. If you would like to work on this committee, please contact Jerry.

A number of other initiatives, including strategies for increasing recognition of the value of liberal education in engineering education, were discussed at the business meeting. For further details, please see the complete version of the minutes (available on the web soon). If you haven't visited the LED Web page at http://engr.calvin.edu/aseeled/, I hope you will do so soon. The page contains complete contact details for all LED officers and other useful information.

If you are interested in participating in any of the LED activities mentioned above or others, please contact the designated contact person for that activity or me at kan8v@virginia.edu.

Best wishes for the new academic year,
Kay Neeley
Chair, Liberal Education Division
