Definition and Goals of Liberal Learning in Engineering Education

Dear LED members,

As noted in the last Newsletter, we have been appointed to lead a project on the Definition and Goals of Liberal Learning in Engineering Education. The purpose of this project is to produce a White Paper that will summarize the views of LED members on developing a definition and standards for liberal education in engineering. Are the needed or not? Would a definition and standards be useful?

This project stems in part from a talk given at the last ASEE meetings, which unfortunately did not make it into the CD ROM version on the proceedings and is therefore posted on the web:
http://www-personal.umich.edu/~nsteneck/papers/engineering/00_asee.PDF It is argued in this paper that Criteria 2000 present an ideal opportunity to set standards for liberal education as a way of strengthening its role in engineering education. Needless to say, not everyone agreed with the notion of setting standards or even seeking to define "liberal education." Thus, rather than dismissing the idea or setting up a committee to explore standards/definition, as an initial first step we were appointed a committee of two to initiate a discussion on the need for clearer goals and definitions for liberal education.

Toward this end, a separate LED listserve will be established for those who want to participate in the discussion and the preparation of the White Paper. If you are interested in participating, please let us know by
email. Once the group is established, we will begin the discussion.
