MINUTES

OF THE BUSINESS MEETING OF THE
LIBERAL EDUCATION DIVISION OF ASEE
JUNE 2002, MONTREAL, CANADA

The meeting was called to order by division chair Caroline Carvil, who thanked the 2002 program chair, Bernie Carlson, for his efforts in organizing the program and the reception and dinner for LED members.

The minutes from last year’s meeting were read and approved.

The Liberal Education Division’s Olmsted award for 2002 was presented to David Ollis of North Carolina State University.

Jerry Gravander presented proposed revisions to the division by-laws. After much discussion, the members present concluded that the proposed revisions should be circulated by email via the LED listserv and that an email ballot would be taken.

The members discussed the White Paper authored by Nick Steneck, Barbara Olds, and Kay Neeley. The members present voted to endorse the White Paper and suggested several minor revisions to it. They also presented suggestions for disseminating it.

The PIC III representative, Nancy Denton, visited the meeting to convey a message of support for the division’s work from the ASEE Board of Directors, who indicated that representatives of industry have emphasized the importance of the abilities students develop through liberal education.

Kay Neeley, chair of the nominations committee, presented the following slate of officers:

Chair: Sarah Pfatteicher
Chair-Elect: Bernie Carlson
Program Chair: Julia Williams
Program Chair-Elect: Borjana Mikic

Steve VanderLeest will continue as Web Master, and Michael Alley will continue as Secretary-Treasurer. The slate was unanimously elected. (Note: during the course of the year, Mikic found that she was not able to fulfill the duties of program-chair elect. Sarah Pfatteicher appointed John Krupczak, who graciously agreed to take on the office.)
