Gas Turbine Demonstration
11/1/2005

|
The chemical, civil and mechanical engineering concentration junior classes, under Professors Sykes and Heun, study heat engines, including the Brayton Cycle for gas turbines. To experience the implementation of this technology, these students visited the Kent Intermediate School District's Aircraft Maintenance Technology Training Center. After a safety review and orientation, the students examined two GE J79 gas turbines equipped with afterburners that had been removed from military jets. Then, several Allison 251 gas turbines were studied; some were mechanically opened and one was mounted in a retired military helicopter. Finally, the students observed the startup, operation and shutdown of an Allison 251 on the tarmack. During the tour numerous other aircraft engines and small aircraft were observed. |
