If you are thinking of becoming a teacher, you have probably been inspired by a good teacher you had who made a subject come alive. Outstanding teachers are unique, and their impact on students is immeasurable.
Students in the Secondary Education Program are certified to teach their major and minor subject areas in grades 6-12. Art, music, PE, Spanish, and French are also available for grades K-12 on a secondary teaching certificate.
The secondary education program can be completed in four years with careful planning. It is helpful if students choose core courses recommended for secondary education, decide early which levels and subjects they would like to teach, have high school exemptions, and are willing to take summer courses.
Students typically spend the first year completing core courses. Be sure to consult the list of recommended core courses for secondary education.
During the second year, it's important to choose major and minor subject areas. Secondary education students select a major and minor. The visual arts, integrated science, and music majors do not require a minor.
During the final two years, students complete education courses as well as major and minor courses. Students finish the program by completing a full semester of student teaching.
