Literacy in Sierra Leone
Dr. Johanna Kuyvenhoven was awarded a planning grant from the Higher Education for Development program in 2009 to support her work in Sierra Leone. Jo and her collaborators will develop a teaching of reading syllabus to be used in teacher training colleges. Her book, The Crocodile's Reward, was distributed to teachers throughout the country in 2008.
Exploring the Faces of Educational Diversity
The Beversluis Forum was held on February 19, 2008. Students, professors, and local educators attended workshops about international partnerships, teaching in diverse school settings, and constructing ethnically diverse curricula.
Developing Sustainable Christian Schools in Under-Resourced Areas
A consultation on developing sustainable Christian schools in under-resourced areas in North American and international settings was held in October, 2007.
Teacher Education Program Earns Exemplary Rating
Calvin's program earned an "exemplary performance" rating from the Michigan Department of Education in 2007.
TRIAGE Summer Research Institutes
TRIAGE (Team Researchers in a GLOBE-al Environment) is a year-round science research program funded by the National Science Foundation. Middle school students have been busy in fields, ponds and laboratories at Calvin College during the summer of 2007.

Dr. LeRoy Stegink retired from the Education Department in May, 2007.

Six Calvin students spent Interim teaching music in the Grand Rapids Public Schools as part of a class led by Professor Phillip Hash.

This innovative new center at Calvin will bring fresh resources to Christian school administrators. The Center will provide world-class executive management education for heads of Christian schools representing a wide range of faith traditions.
TRIAGE: Team Researchers in a GLOBE-al Environment
Teacher Education Program faculty were awarded a $720,000 grant funded by the National Science Foundation to engage local middle-school students in research related to environmental sustainability. The TRIAGE website includes details about the project. Rebecca Martin coordinated the after-school programs during '06-'07.
Principal and Administrator Breakfast
Local Christian school principals and administrators met at Calvin for breakfast and discussion regarding issues facing our schools and how we can support each other as Christian institutions.
Makhado and Hasseler Speak on Education (Calvin Chimes)
Samson Makhado is the Association of Christian Schools International Regional Director for Southern Africa. He visited Calvin to discuss the role of partnerships in Christian African education.
Rural Meets Urban (Calvin Chimes)
Alexander and Moline Christian Elementary School students participated in a pen pal project under the leadership of Dr. Arden Post and student teacher Carly VanWyngarden.
