Dr. Jim Rooks Appointed Dean of Education
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Jim Rooks will begin his term as Dean of Education during the fall 2009 semester, continuing with the projects that he has taken on while serving in an interim capacity.
Early in his career, Dr. Rooks served as a teacher and principal in Canada. He completed his Ed.D. at the University of Toronto in 1998 with a research focus on literacy and reading. Dr. Rooks taught for several years at Redeemer College in Ontario before coming to Calvin in 2001.
At Calvin, Dr. Rooks has been teaching reading methods courses in the elementary program. He also serves as the advisor for Calvin's M.Ed. in Literacy. Since 2004, Dr. Rooks has managed a grant-funded Four Blocks Literacy Partnership which provides training, support, and workshops for teachers at several local elementary schools. He has also taken groups of Calvin students to Honduras to explore international teaching.
Dr. Rooks' experience and leadership will surely benefit Calvin's Teacher Education Program. Please join us in congratulating him on his new role as Dean of Education.
