News: The Crocodile's Reward

Jo Kuyvenhoven in Sierra Leone

The Crocodile's Reward is a Kuranko folktale told by Tagbe Tarawali, written by Calvin Education Professor
Jo Kuyvenhoven, and illustrated by Margaret Hofland. It is a trilingual reader in English, Krio, and Kuranko. The book is set in a village in Sierra Leone and it tells the story of a boy who goes fishing and meets a crocodile.

Dr. Kuyvenhoven has been working for years to improve the literacy rate and teacher preparation in Sierra Leone. Click here to read about her recent efforts.

In November 2008, nearly 10,000 copies of The Crocodile's Reward were distributed to teachers throughout the country, some in very remote villages deep in the jungle. Most schools have few teaching
materials so the children were very excited to receive the books!
